Before and after

Before

I started pulling and trimming the overgrown plants our front. With my limited knowledge of plants of any type, I wasn't sure what was weed or plant. And I hated the evergreen bushes. So I ended up pulling everything out. It looks a little empty now but I like the minimalist look. I will add more plants when I have a better idea of what I want. For now, I have hostas and a few petunias along with the umbrella tree and ugly scrub tree.

An old desk-update

I have asked my grandparents about the old desk. They do not remember exactly where it came from. As near as they can tell, the old desk belonged to my great-great grandmother. She then passed it on to my great grandfather, who passed to to my grandmother, who passed it to her son, who then passed it to me. Crazy!

an old desk

I inherited an old desk many years ago. It made the journey to Billings with my Uncle Chuck when my Grandpa and Grandma sold their house in Albuquerque. The old desk was a incredibly heavy, several drawers stuck, and the top was scared and stained. I found a class list from my uncle's 9th grade year on the pull out board. I am not sure where the old desk originated. My desk had markings on the top from a roll top but did not have one when I got it. However, it was very similar to this picture (minus the rolltop).

This was my favorite desk. I used it all through high school. When I moved to Idaho, my mom loaded it into a mail van and moved it down to my house in Chubbuck. It was moved at least once while in Idaho. When I decided to move to Michigan, the desk moved back up to Montana to sit in storage. A couple of years later, I packed the old desk in the back of a diesel truck and drove it across many flat states to Grand Blanc, Michigan. It lived in my aunt and uncle's barn for a couple more years where spiders and barn swallows managed to make it very dirty. Then, I loaded the old desk into a Uhaul truck and moved it to my current house in Pinckney.

All of the moves have been rough on the old desk. Several drawers have completely fallen apart. The top is crack and even more dirty. The sides are loose and the whole piece wiggles unnaturally.

Today I decided to give up the old desk as a desk. I couldn't just throw it away though. Rather, I let it fall apart and found a few pieces to reuse in a new way. I have wanted a new headboard so I created one out of pieces of the old desk.

I still have a few pieces left that I hope to make bedside tables to match. It is still my favorite old desk.
