Before and after

Before

I started pulling and trimming the overgrown plants our front. With my limited knowledge of plants of any type, I wasn't sure what was weed or plant. And I hated the evergreen bushes. So I ended up pulling everything out. It looks a little empty now but I like the minimalist look. I will add more plants when I have a better idea of what I want. For now, I have hostas and a few petunias along with the umbrella tree and ugly scrub tree.

Sometimes less IS better. I like hostas a lot, especially if you have a lot of areas that don't get shade. Looks good, Erin!

LOOKS AWESOME!! i hear you about the evergreens.....we just pulled out 6 in our front flower beds...we still have to get the stumps out--how'd you do that? don't you love yardwork when you can see such progress?!

Wow! I agree with Em, hostas are lovely and umbrella trees make me happy too!

Thanks everyone! I hurt but it was worth it. As for the stumps, Adriane, I dug them out. I dug all around each, wiggled it, dug it more, wiggled more, and pulled it until I was able to get them out. Probably not the most efficient way to do it but I finally got them.
