School!

It's official! I am a real classroom teacher. And I am exhausted. Today was the first day of school. First day of kindergarten. The kids are so cute and very excited with their new clothes and shoes, backpacks and school supplies. And I am totally swamped and overwhelmed. I have a couple of "challenging" students. One had a major meltdown early in the morning in the bathrooms. She couldn't get her pants buttoned. Her "special need" makes this even more interesting because she is very determined to do things on her own. So we had some yelling and some screaming and some tears but we made it. I don't think that I have ever had anyone take so many pictures of me before today. Parents were snapping pictures as we walked into school, down the hall and into the classroom. Then they were all over those cameras again when the kids were getting ready to leave. A few were even on the video cameras. We definitely have involved parents. They are all over the place and very interested in everything that is going on. I am sure that they have many unattrative shots of me, but oh well. Being a teacher has really brought back some memories of when I was in elementary school. It is amazing how much things are different and how some things never change. One thing about my district is that it is more affluent and has some amazing things because of it. All of the classrooms have an "extra" everyday. Those are music, art, PE, and media (library). Those are classes that the kids go to with a specialized teacher. We provide school supplies (although I asked for donations) and all of the kids are bused to and from school. Those are just a few things that amaze me about the district. Plus the fact that is doesn't qualify for a Title One program. Anyway, just wanted to give you a glimpse of school!
