School!
It's official! I am a real classroom teacher. And I am exhausted. Today was the first day of school. First day of kindergarten. The kids are so cute and very excited with their new clothes and shoes, backpacks and school supplies. And I am totally swamped and overwhelmed. I have a couple of "challenging" students. One had a major meltdown early in the morning in the bathrooms. She couldn't get her pants buttoned. Her "special need" makes this even more interesting because she is very determined to do things on her own. So we had some yelling and some screaming and some tears but we made it. I don't think that I have ever had anyone take so many pictures of me before today. Parents were snapping pictures as we walked into school, down the hall and into the classroom. Then they were all over those cameras again when the kids were getting ready to leave. A few were even on the video cameras. We definitely have involved parents. They are all over the place and very interested in everything that is going on. I am sure that they have many unattrative shots of me, but oh well. Being a teacher has really brought back some memories of when I was in elementary school. It is amazing how much things are different and how some things never change. One thing about my district is that it is more affluent and has some amazing things because of it. All of the classrooms have an "extra" everyday. Those are music, art, PE, and media (library). Those are classes that the kids go to with a specialized teacher. We provide school supplies (although I asked for donations) and all of the kids are bused to and from school. Those are just a few things that amaze me about the district. Plus the fact that is doesn't qualify for a Title One program. Anyway, just wanted to give you a glimpse of school!

i didn't know that the things you mentioned were out of the ordinary. when i went to linder elementary in meridian, id--we had those extras too. kindergartners were bussed to and from school, also. i think we had to bring our own supplies though, but maybe not for kindergarten because it was only a half day.
when i said extra, i meant the p.e., music and library classes.
Congrats on making it through the first day of school.
When I did my student teaching in Pocatello the kids were lucky to get one special a week. Like PE on Thursday one week and library the next week. These kids are at a special at the same time everyday. I think it is a budget thing. Most of the time those specials teachers service several schools but we have one for each special just for our school. Plus each special is an hour long. Except mine of course. Our class is still trying to figure out how we fit in. : )
wow. i didn't realize elementary schools were like that in poky. it must be a county by county thing in idaho.
one huge thing i noticed when i moved from ada county to bannock, was the change (as in digression) in cafeteria food. yeah. when i was in meridian, i never understood all the jokes about how cafeteria food is awful...
until i moved to pocatello.
anyhow. congrats on your first day of work. i bet all those kids are uber cute. and you are too!
hey just missing you a lot lately, hope things are going well Miss Peifer :)
